Testing reports values for L-carnitine. After protein precipitation, diacylation reaction with alkaline frees carnitine in sample solution. Carnitine reacts with acetyl-coenzyme A forming free coenzyme A and acetyl carnitine with the presence of catalyst. Free coenzyme A reacts with the chromogenic reagent and generates products which can be quantitatively measured by UV-VIS spectroscopy.
